July 20 - 22, 2001 : Toronto, Ontario
Garrison Commander, TD741, finally allowed me (TK878) to hang up my
poodoo broom and bucket and move up from cleaning the dewback stalls to
actually observe and report on our recent Imperial patrol of Toronto
Trek 15. The 501st Canadian Garrison
made a patrol of the convention on Saturday while also parading around
with 2 Rebel prisoners. Members TX741, TK878, TT501 (as an Imperial
officer), TR1125, and TK0.05 (the Trooper Arm), attended along with
Rebel prisoners: hot saucy Rebel Pilot Mookie and Jedi avatar, both
from the Rebel Legion.
Toronto
Trek is Canada's largest volunteer-run sci-fi convention. It
concentrates on TV sci-fi such as Star Trek and Babylon 5. This year
also featured a First Wave minicon. We saw a lack of presence of Star
Wars so the 501st Canadian Garrison and the Rebel Legion decided to
remedy that!
After arriving at the con, we registered, suited up, paraded around the
grounds, serveyed the dealer's room, and posed for a bunch of photos.
During lunch, TX741 and myself (TK878) provided entertainment for the
hotel and convention guests and staff by attempting to sit down for
lunch in our trooper armour. After lunch, we took in some of what the
con offered -- anime videos were being shown and some amazing works
were presented at the convention art show. The Hubble Space Telescope seminar given by Inge Heyer was quite enjoyable.
After dinner we prepared for the masquarade. Our skit for this year was
called "Imperial Battle Royale" which was essentially a battle between
the Empire and the Rebel Alliance. There is quite a lot to describe,
and I'm sure you don't want to keep reading. Please watch the video
available below as a video is worth a million words. The idea behind
the skit was that we keep it short and sweet, and that everyone would
be doing something while on stage. We won the Best Smackdown Award!!!!
After we posed for post-masquerade photos... lots, and lots, and lots of photos (please send
them to us, we'll put them up here!), TT501 and prisoner Mookie headed
off to the convention dance. Mookie and TT501 danced the night away
while TX741, avatar (TX741's prisoner) and I scouted the TF.N Fanforce
room for Rebels. We were horrified to find Uilmuteiz doing funky stuff
with Sith Lord Darth Maul. While we were there, we reviewed historical
tapes of the great battles of the Empire.
On Sunday we took in some more of the convention and got autographs.
There were a lot of great costumes at the convention this year, as is
expected at any Toronto Trek. Planet of the Apes (not competing but
quite nice), Puss in Boots, Listerine the Action Hero for your Gums,
and a nice Japanese costume of Ryoko Bayushi-Samurai were among the
memorable ones.
Many thanks go out to the convention office staff for allowing us to
use their storage/meeting room as a change room. It was complete with
ice water, tables, and a fully functional bathroom! It was incredibly
helpful! Thanks from all of us at the 501st.ca.
Thanks also to our masquerade Den Mom, Kerri Dixon for getting our group engergized for the masquerade! You were a blast!
