San Diego ComicCon 2000

July 21, 2000 : San Diego, California, USA

The San Diego ComicCon is one of the largest comic book conventions in the world. The Southern California Garrison figured that it was high time for them to display the might of the Empire there. In order to aid them in their endeavour, three members of the European Garrison and one solitary Canadian Garrison member (TD741) made their way into San Diego.

Before starting the report I must admit that the troopers (and their associated better halves) at this convention were some of the best people I have ever had the opportunity to meet. And of course, Jimmy, the perfect Han Solo, was great as well. Thumbs up to the Southern California and European Garrison members who were present.

Anyway...

The 501st apparently was the hit of this year's ComicCon. We had trouble taking two steps without having someone stop us, asking for a picture. Wizards of the Coast asked us to help with escorting duty (we managed to escape the crowd long enough to do it once). The ComicCon organizers snapped a picture of us for their next booklet. Entertainment Earth, Hasbro, Fandom-Inc are among some of the other companies that just loved having us around. Some of our people were interviewed by CNN and assorted web-broadcast sites. A few others met Mark Hamill. Did I mention that starwars.com had pictures of the group up as well?

The costume contest on Saturday night, had about 4000 people in the audience. I can tell you one thing -- that audience was unforgiving and just plain nasty at times. The costume contest had a few really good costumes, some not-so-bad ones and some down-right-bad. After a series of three or four bad ones, one of the audience members yelled out: "WHEN WILL THE HURTING STOP?" (and that was one of the nicer comments).

There were some interesting entries:

One thing I didn't get was the overwhelming theme of "Sailor Moon". I don't remember the order of appearance but there was a Sailor Moon parody: "Sailor Latrine" which I just did not get. Then there was the "Space: Above and Beyond" group which was battling some "unknown" force that happened to be: "Sailor Moon". (The costumes were great, guys. I would have personally picked something like a TeleTubby or Barney). After that, a mishmash of good costumes remaking "Who wants to Marry a Millionaire?" (The millionaire ended up being Jabba). And guess who made a special appearance? You got it "Sailor Moon"! And of course, to add insult to injury, the last contestants ended up being a choreographed dance number of 20 or so Sailor Scouts. Aaaaargh.... The costumes were accurate from what I can tell, but the choreographed number was way too long and wasn't all that spectacular (think of an elementary school play.)

...Oh, the Sailor Jamboree won Best of Show.

One of the highlights of the show for me was meeting Victor Lucas. "Who?", you all ask. He's the executive producer/co-"anchor" of "The Electric Playground". This is a television programme about video-games that covers PC and all popular game consoles. The actual show is based in Vancouver, however it is aired across Canada on the "Space" and "BBS" networks. Apparently it also plays in the U.S. and will be playing in Europe shortly. Be sure to check out their website and their new site "Entertainment Tomorrow."

As I grabbed the shuttle bus back to the airport on the Monday following the con, I sat next to this unassuming gentleman. We started chatting. It turns out that he too was at ComicCon. I mentioned that I was one of the Stormtroopers/Biker Scouts that was parading around the convention. He replied: "Really? I worked on some Star Wars comic books. I drew a lot of Stormtroopers." We kept bumping into each other at the airport.

Anyway, the funny thing about ComicCon (and DragonCon actually) is that there are so many things to do, you simply can't keep track of them all. I only had time to look into the actual schedules when I got home and was surprised to find out which celebrities were actually present.

Well, enough of my babbling here are the photos (no thumbnails, sorry):
I would like to thank Manuella, Jen Nill and Vania for taking most of these pictures. They turned out great! Thanks!
